Find Your Own Venues (FYOV) Application for the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival

Applications will be available online on March 6. The application period will be open till March 30.

Guidelines for FYOV's:

+ All shows that are a part of the Capital Fringe Festival must begin within the dates of the Fringe (July 12 – 29, 2012).
+ All FYOV productions must be located in the District of Columbia.

+ One show per company or artist in the festival. If you have already been accepted as a Fringe Run Venue you can not also produce a FYOV OR one artist or company can not produce two FYOV productions.
+ The Fringe Festival does not accept applications for TBA shows or incomplete applications.
+ We do not accept applications without an identified venue for your production.
+ We will not be accepting all FYOV applications. First priority will go to those with venues located within or close to the Festival Grounds. The Festival Grounds are located between 7th & L Street, NW & 7th & D Street, NW. Additionally, we will have a few venues located around Studio Theatre on 14th Street.
+ All FYOV’s must sell a minimum of 50% of their tickets through the Festival Box Office.
+ All FYOV’s must support and enforce the Capital Fringe Festival Button Policy. All patron’s will be required to present a 2012 Capital Fringe Festival Button to gain admittance to all FYOV’s. Buttons are $5 and must be available for sale at the door of your venue.
+ Most shows in our Festival are 70 to 90 minutes with low tech needs. We do not have a limit on length – but shows between 70-90 minutes have proven successful in our Festival.

What is the Capital Fringe Festival?

The Capital Fringe Festival is a self-producing festival, where established and emerging artists can present their work free of a selection process. For some of you applying it may be a once-a-year opportunity, and for others, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create, produce and perform a show. For more established companies/artists, this can be an opportunity to take a new risk and join the Fringe movement. We strive to encourage Artists in our Festival to give expression to their talents and develop their artistic freedom: without any curatorial barriers between their work and the audience. We want to empower the artists in our Festival to continue on as successful, independent producers.

How does Festival work?

The Fringe staff arranges space, funding, training programs, marketing and community engagement. Artists apply for participation, and as many as possible are selected - first-come first-serve - to present their work in the annual Festival. Those who are not immediately accepted are placed on a waiting list and notified of their acceptance if space becomes available.

Capital Fringe has consistently guaranteed and given 50-70% of the ticket revenue back to the Artists in each of its first four years. Most Fringe artists are scheduled for five performances. In 2010, each artist in our Festival received an average of $1,670 in net ticket revenue with some performers receiving up to $7,000 for their five-show run.

Artists are asked to describe the sort of venue they would prefer for producing their show in the Fringe (stage size, technical requirements, etc.). Capital Fringe tries to make sure each show is assigned the venue that best fits what is requested. Space is limited - we can’t always give a best-case scenario to our artists, but we work hard to come as close as we can. Fringe staff compiles and reviews all applications from January to February. Artists/companies are notified in mid to late March about acceptance. Upon acceptance, each artist/company is given a HOW TO FRINGE GUIDE that walks them through producing in the Festival. Fringe staff is also available to answer any remaining questions that Artists might have. During the Festival, each artist is given a unique online account to view their own box office in “real-time”. Box office payments are mailed to the artist 15 business days after the Festival.

Tickets are between $12 to $17 - accessible to all economic brackets. All attendees must purchase an admission button, good for admission to the festival plus discounts around the District throughout the year.
