POSITIONS CURRENTLY VACANT:

FRINGE FESTIVAL TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Capital Fringe is looking for a Technical Director to work on planning and coordinating the technical needs for all festival venues, as well as the festival’s Baldacchino Gypsy Tent Bar, our outdoor tented beer garden/performance space for the 7th Annual Capital Fringe Festival July 12 to 29. The Technical Director works with Fringe Staff to oversee the budgeting, planning, construction and load-in of all festival venues as well as the lighting and sound departments. Technical Director will supervise Master Carpenter, Master Electrician, Sound Coordinator, and festival over-hire production staff. During the Festival the Technical Director will be part of a production team on-duty rotation to troubleshoot issues as they arise.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Draft ground plans including stage, seating, lighting, sound for all festival venues.
  • Designing and building seating platforms, decks and other projects as needed. 
  • Planning load-in and strike of all festival venues.
  • Ensuring technical specifications of each space are properly communicated to Artists.
  • Handle and troubleshoot technical problems with the Fringe Production staff.
  • Assist Electrics and Sound crew to ensure successful planning and load-in in each venue.
  • Ensure Festival Venues adhere to Fire and Safety Codes, and ensure all Staff are properly trained on shop and venue safety practices and procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years professional theatre experience or professional experience in similar field
  • Good working knowledge of Vectorworks
  • Be physical fit and not be afraid of getting dirty and sweating
  • Excellent management and communication skills
  • Grace and a sense of humor under pressure
  • Mastery of Carpentry Skills including welding
  • Experience with sound or electrics a plus

TIME COMMITMENT:
Technical Director must have availability from May 1 - August 10, 2012.

FRINGE FESTIVAL MASTER CARPENTER
Capital Fringe is looking for a Master Carpenter to work on building venues for the 7th Annual Capital Fringe Festival July 12 to 29. The Master Carpenter will work with the Technical Director to execute construction and Load-In of all festival venues. During the Festival the Master Carpenter will be part of a production team on-duty rotation to troubleshoot issues as they arise, or may be a venue manager of one of the Festival Venues.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpreting floorplans / Draftings.
  • Building seating platforms, decks and other projects as needed. 
  • Handle and troubleshoot technical problems with the Fringe Production staff.
  • Load in and load out of all venues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of Vectorworks
  • Mastery of Carpentry Skills
  • Be physical fit and not be afraid of getting dirty and sweating
  • Knowledge of construction, shop safety, and project management
  • Grace and a sense of humor under pressure
  • Experience with welding and metalwork a plus

FRINGE FESTIVAL VENUE MANAGER
Capital Fringe is looking for 13-15 venue managers for the 7th Annual Capital Fringe Festival this July 12 to 29. Fringe Festival Venue Managers act as the primary point of contact of Capital Fringe to the Fringe Run Venue Contacts, Artists, Volunteers and Patrons of their particular venue.  The Venue Manager will be in place to oversee and assist their assigned artists and box office volunteers.  Also, the Venue Manager acts as the direct path of information from the venue to Capital Fringe Staff.
 
The Venue Manager must have a positive attitude, ability to problem solve and have excellent communication skills.  The Venue Manager should also have a strong background in technical theater and/or stage management.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work directly with assigned venue contact person during the Festival to ensure proper use of the space.
  • Oversee fast-paced, repertory performance schedule for multiple productions.
  • Assist and supervise Fringe Artists during performances and technical rehearsals.
  • Work with box office volunteers to ensure good communication with patrons, and to get shows started on time.
  • Handle and troubleshoot technical problems or needs of Artists with the assistance of other Fringe Staff.
  • Assist with load in and load out of all venues.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of theatre production, or commensurate experience in a similar area
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work independently
  • Some lighting, sound, or SM experience preferred but not required
  • Some experience with front of house or box office preferred but not required
  • General interest in theatre or event production
  • Grace and sense of humor under pressure
  • Friendly demeanor, ability to manage people and enforce rules/policies

TIME COMMITMENT:

July 1 – August 4, 2012

FRINGE FESTIVAL BOX OFFICE MANAGER

Capital Fringe is looking for an individual experienced in ticketing systems, and box office and volunteer management to serve as a Box Office Manager for the 7th Annual Capital Fringe Festival July 12 to 29.  We are looking for energetic, engaging and pro-active folks with excellent communication skills and an outgoing personality.  This is a wonderful position for those that are interested in meeting and working with hundreds of volunteers, artists and patrons from all walks of life.

We will be hiring (1) Manager, and (2) Assistant Managers – so if you fit the skills/qualifications below please apply for either position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implementing Box Office systems and policies for the 2012 Fringe Festival
  • Assisting in training Box Office Staff and Assistant Managers
  • Oversee set up of physical Box Office prior to Festival opening (computers, tickets, supplies, etc)
  • Manage daily operations of Festival Box office including ticket and pass sales, cash reconciliation, and reporting
  • In conjunction with Volunteer Coordinator, act as point of contact for Box Office volunteers during Festival
  • Assist patrons with complaints; communicate clearly Fringe policy and accommodate requests when acceptable
  • Lead the set up and break down of the Box Office and pack Box Office materials for storage

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-3 years management experience in box office and/or front-of-house operations
  • Experience with financial reporting and cash handling
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit performing arts organizations
  • Spreadsheet & database skills (i.e. proficiency in Excel)
  • Excellent multitasking and customer service skills

FRINGE FESTIVAL BOX OFFICE ASSISTANT

Capital Fringe is looking for Box Office Staff for the 7th Annual Capital Fringe Festival July 12 to 29. Box Office staff must be energetic, engaging and pro-active with excellent communication skills and an outgoing personality.  This is a wonderful position for those that are interested in meeting and working with hundreds of volunteers, artists and patrons from all walks of life.

  • All box office operations for the Festival, including: sales of single tickets and passes; ticket distribution to venues; daily deposits and reports; and customer service
  • Set up and break down of Fringe Box Office before and after festival
  • Work with the indispensable volunteers who make the Festival happen
  • Be the face of Fringe to the public and Fringe artists

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience in box office and front-of-house operations
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit performing arts organizations
  • Excellent multitasking and customer service skills

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Volunteer Coordinator shall be responsible for the recruitment, training, scheduling and supervision of the 2012 Festival volunteers for all Fringe Run Festival venues and for ensuring that all productions and performances in the Festival and special events related to the Festival have sufficient volunteer support. The Volunteer Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining the policies and positive front of house atmosphere required by the Festival. Volunteer Coordinator works closely with the Box Office Manager,

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create 2012 Volunteer Handbook, survey and all volunteer related materials
  • Schedule and attend Outreach Volunteer Happy Hours leading up to Festival
  • Execute mailings and email campaign to potential volunteers
  • Schedule/Lead volunteer training sessions (2-3) and manage over 200 volunteers for our 18 day Festival
  • Be present to receive all volunteers daily at check-in at the Festival Box office and work closely with the Box Office Manager and Staff.
  • Maintain sufficient contact and communication with volunteers in order to ensure compliance with schedule and duties by the volunteers.
  • Promptly and efficiently resolve all issues that arise regarding volunteers.
  • Organize and carryout Volunteer thank you party post-Festival.
  • Assist in setting up Box Office / Volunteer area at Fort Fringe for the 2012 Festival

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Computer skills: including Excel and Word
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Self Starter with the ability to troubleshoot and work independently
  • Must be able to work in fast-paced environment
  • Grace and a sense of humor under pressure
  • Theatre Box office or Front-of-House experience is recommended but not required.

TIME COMMITMENT:

The Volunteer Coordinator must have complete availability for the month of July. Part-time and off-site hours of prep begin in May.

COMPENSATION:

This is a seasonal contact position and begins in May on a part time basis and by July becomes full time through the Festival. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

2012 Internships

Each year Capital Fringe offers a limited number of unpaid internships to students and recent graduates. Interns contribute to the administration, operation and delivery of Capital Fringe across a variety of areas and in doing so gain great insight into the operation of a non-profit organization arts festival.

Programming Internship

The Capital Fringe Festival is searching for a Programming intern for the 2012 Fringe Festival. The main focus of this internship is to assist in programming the annual Fringe Festival. The festival will feature 150 local, national and international groups doing roughly 800 individual performances. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude and a love for the arts and learning.

Position would begin in early March and run through the end of April.

Responsibilities

  • Working with festival staff to create the program schedule for the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival.
  • Coordinating housing needs for out-of-town artists.
  • Entering data and managing information in our database.
  • Assisting the Fringe Festival staff in day-to-day operations including artist communication and other administrative tasks.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will be familiar with the Washington, DC dance, theater and music communities.
  • A detail oriented, organized, self-starter with initiative who can work on projects independently.
  • Able to work in a high-stress environment.
  • Flexible and adaptable to change.

This is a Unpaid internship, available for college credit.

 

Dates: March – April.

Internship can be extended through the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival.

Fringe Festival Dates July 12 to 29, 2012

Hours: Minimum of 12 hours per week. Exact hours vary around events at Fort Fringe. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Special Events Internship

The Special Events Intern will provide administrative support to the Capital Fringe Development team, primarily assisting with Annual Capital Fringe Gala on April 5,2012.

Responsibilities may include: assisting in the planning, promotion, and staging of special events; preparing invitation mailings; tracking and processing RSVPs; assisting in the procurement of auction items; fulfilling benefits and perks for sponsors and donors; communicating in a variety of mediums to stakeholders and supporters; and run-of-show support at the Annual Gala in April.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be personable, upbeat, enthusiastic, and flexible; able to work independently, but also contribute as a member of a team and receive constructive feedback; computer savvy; and a quick learner who easily adapts to changing priorities. Preferred candidates will have academic backgrounds in Marketing and Communications, English, or Arts Administration, and have a demonstrable interest in the performing arts. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle a plus.

POSITION FILLED

Community Outreach Intern

Intern will assist the Executive Director with raising the profile of the Capital Fringe Festival at college campuses and community events throughout the DC Metro Area area.

Responsibilities may include: providing Festival representation at general community and university events; coordinating set-up, take-down and management of events; entering outreach info into Festival database; enhancing Festival’s online presence and community network; brainstorming new and creative ways to reach out to students, administrators and professors; researching course offerings pertinent to the current Festival season; welcoming student groups; and assisting with audience survey preparation and tally of results.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong social and organizational skills. Must have knowledge of excel, experience with data base entry. Must have valid driver’s license and car access.

Unpaid internship, available for college credit.

Hours: Minimum of 12 hours per week.

Festival Guide Management Internship

The Festival Guide Management Intern will assist the Executive Director and Fringe Graphic Designer with the production process for the 2012 Festival Guide, and with updating the Festival’s show-related website content. The Festival Guide is a full-color, 70-page catalogue that includes descriptions of every show presented in the Fringe Festival, and a comprehensive calendar of all Festival events.

Responsibilities may include: managing, fact-checking, and proofreading information for the Fringe Festival Guide; recording guide information in our database; updating the Festival website with changes to artist or show details.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will enjoy writing and have a strong command of grammar and style; has experience working on student newspapers, literary magazines, or other publications; have familiarity with using database systems; and be comfortable navigating websites and using search engines. Preferred candidates will have some familiarity with Washington, DC and its arts and cultural organizations.

Unpaid internship, available for college credit.
Dates: April-June
Hours: Minimum of 15 hours per week.

Fringe Festival Blog Internship

The Festival Blog Intern will work with the Executive Director and Fringe Publicist to write and post stories, photos, and video about the Fringe Festival, its performances and events, and its artists. The Festival Blog is read by patrons and Fringe goers in the months leading up to the Festival and during the Festival.

Responsibilities may include: writing and publishing items about events featuring Fringe Festival artists; writing and publishing feature stories about Fringe Festival artists and performances; locating and sharing video of artists' current or past performances; promoting blog posts using Festival and artist social media presences.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will enjoy writing and reporting, and will have a strong command of grammar and style. Past experience working on student newspapers, literary magazines, or other publications is desirable; the work is more akin to journalism than marketing. Preferred candidates will have some familiarity with Washington, DC and its arts and cultural organizations, comfort with content management systems and basic HTML, and the ability to effectively use search engines and social media.
